　　在一篇文章中，如果句子千篇一律是簡單句，文章必定很單調(diào)乏味，毫無活力。如果全篇充滿了冗長的復(fù)雜句，讀起來也很費(fèi)力。如下面的兩個(gè)例子：

　　More than twenty years ago， my hometown was just an old， poor and small town. Most of the people were farmers. There were only two factories. The people lived a hard life. Great changes have taken place in the past twenty years. The local economy improved a lot. Now there are many tall buildings. Roads are wide and clean. People can take buses or drive their own cars to go to work. Their living conditions have improved a lot…

　　When I accompanied them on the trip to do research on desertification control in Inner Mongolia and Qinghai Province， I found that the scarcer the resource of a district was， the wilder the local people’s producing activity was， such as excessive reclamation and graze， which was a infernal circle that increasing worsened the environment and lessened the economic level. On the other hand， once we were in Zhejiang Province where bamboo shoots were abundant， I witnessed a more unfortunate economic pattern that farmers by hook or by crook dug up bamboo shoots for sale in recent years but still remained poor and backward state for they disregarded the significance of sustainable development and ran out of resources…

　　如果一篇文章中偶爾一段出現(xiàn)這樣的句子還好，假如通篇都是這種句子，試問錄取委員會(huì)的教授什么感覺？所以在英語文書寫作過程中，應(yīng)該以簡單句為基礎(chǔ)，配合適當(dāng)?shù)牟⒘芯浜蛷?fù)雜句，簡單句通?？梢约有└綄俪煞?，如分詞短語，介詞短語，副詞短語，不定式動(dòng)詞短語。長短句交叉。長句和短句是就句子的字?jǐn)?shù)多少，長短而言的。長句和短句各有其優(yōu)點(diǎn)和缺點(diǎn)。長句因?yàn)槭褂玫亩ㄕZ，狀語較多，限制了概念的外延，增大了概念的內(nèi)涵，所以比較精確，嚴(yán)密，但使用起來不夠活潑簡便。短句，由于字?jǐn)?shù)少，直截了當(dāng)，一般比較簡潔，明快，有力，但不利于表達(dá)復(fù)雜的語義內(nèi)容。在具體語言活動(dòng)中，最好長短句交替使用。這既體現(xiàn)了節(jié)奏上的要求，也是意義上的需要。
