The Shfield Antimicrobial Resistance Network (SHAMROK) is a new EPSRC funded initiative to encourage and increase engineering and physical sciences activity in the fight against the increase in antimicrobial/antibiotic resistant pathogens and the resultant risks to human health. Initially funded to run over a two-year period, our Network will cut across the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Engineering at the University of Shfield, providing a free flow of ideas, technologies and approaches, ensuring that the AMR activity gains from the Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) strengths at the University of Shfield.

We are looking for a senior Research Associate to play a pivotal role in bringing together and exploring new research opportunities between the Faculties. This appointment is for a “molecular scientist” to work on projects that utilize and develop the strengths in microscopy (atomic force and fluorescence optical), chemistry and tissue engineering in Shfield to tackle challenges posed by microbiology. A focus is on the development of chemical and biophysical methods for understanding bacterial cell wall synthesis and how antibiotics such as penicillin disrupt this process.

You will play a pivotal role in the SHAMROK project, it is a highly interdisciplinary position that will enhance existing collaboration between Physics (Hobbs), Chemistry (Jones) and Molecular Biology (Foster) but also develop new collaborations with Engineering Materials (MacNeil) and Infection and Immunity (Dockrell). As the network progresses there will also be an additional role to interface with short projects financed through pump priming, and to ensure that potential synergies with existing strengths are maximized. Flexibility and an ability to plan a complex workload across different laboratories will be of paramount importance. Have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Physics, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or closely related areas.
