[寒潮 cold snap]

例句：

寒潮帶來降雪，這場雪從周六晚間一直持續(xù)到周日下午。

Cold snap(寒潮、寒流)是指strong cold air(強冷空氣)由亞洲大陸西部或西北部侵襲中國時的強降溫天氣過程，一般多發(fā)生在秋末、冬季、初春時節(jié)，也可以稱作cold spell、cold wave。寒潮地面高壓的前端一般都有一條cold front(冷鋒，冷空氣前鋒)。有時，為緩解干旱，有關部門會進行weather modification(人工影響天氣)作業(yè)帶來降雪。

[極端天氣 extreme weather]

極端天氣(extreme weather)近年來頻繁出現(xiàn)在世界各地，包括冰雹(hailstone)、雷暴(thunderstorm)、龍卷風(tornado)，颶風(hurricane)，以及暴雪(snowstorm)等，其中極其嚴重的暴雪又叫blizzard。

雖然極端天氣這樣的自然災害(natural disaster)帶來的損失不可避免，不過提前做好各項應急預案(emergency response plan)，災害發(fā)生時第一時間組織人員撤離(evacuation)也是可以幫助減少損失的。當然，災害過去之后的重建(rebuilding after disaster)也不容忽視。

Orange alert就是指"橙色預警"，臺風、暴雨、暴雪、寒潮、大風等氣象災害預警信號基本劃分為四級，分別以藍色(blue)、黃色(yellow)、橙色(orange)和紅色(red)表示，警報級別依次上升。

Alert表示"警報，警惕"，如恐怖威脅預警"terror alert"。

暴雪不僅會造成大量stranded passengers(滯留旅客)，而且導致多地機場full or partial closure(全部或部分關閉)，flight cancellations and delays(航班取消或延誤)，long-distance bus(長途客車)運行受阻。

Low visibility(低能見度)也使道路交通出現(xiàn)阻塞。很多人改乘bullet train(動車)返鄉(xiāng)。Cold wave(寒潮)導致北方大部分地區(qū)出現(xiàn)降溫，多處state highways(國道)關閉。有關部門會開展anti-disaster work(抗災工作)，如在道路上噴灑snow-melting chemicals(融雪劑)幫助除雪，或采用snow plow(掃雪機)清理路面。

[公共供暖 public heating]

Public heating system就是我國北方多數(shù)城市實行的"公共供暖系統(tǒng)"，過去全部都是collective heating(集體供暖)，現(xiàn)在不少住宅小區(qū)都已實現(xiàn)household-based heating(分戶采暖)。

一般來說，average daily temperatures(日平均氣溫)連續(xù)5天低于5攝氏度時就可以開始供暖了。北方的heating season(采暖季)一般都從11月開始，部分寒冷地區(qū)則在十月中旬即開始供暖。

[停電 power failure]
